Body and ground

Body and ground

on what holds and what endures

This work is not about the beauty of the female body.
It is about the question the body poses to stone: which one of us is carrying the other?

The female figure in these sculptures is stripped of portraiture deliberately. This is not a woman — it is a function: a presence that reproduces, sustains, continues. Cultures build languages, architectures, and rituals around this function. And simultaneously — say nothing about what that function costs the one who performs it.

Stone appears here neither as pedestal nor as throne. It appears as condition. That without which the figure cannot occupy space. This is not a compliment to stone — it is a diagnosis of the situation: the organic exists only where structure permits it.

Form as reduction

Generalized volumes are not simplification. They are the erasure of the individual in favor of the structural. The figure becomes a type, not a person.

Posture as argument

Sitting is not rest. It is enforced stillness. Stability that reads as choice may be the absence of another option.

Stone as power

The material of foundations is also the material of walls. Permanence and enclosure are cut from the same rock.

Softness as myth

What appears tender — endures. What appears eternal — erodes. The hierarchy of materials is unstable.

Between body and stone there is no hierarchy. There is mutual dependency — which each era has named differently: nature, purpose, fate, archetype. This series does not offer a new word. It offers a pause before the old one is spoken again.

The sculpture arrests not a moment of rest — but a moment of recognising weight: the weight borne from above, and the weight lodged below. Both are real. Both are silent.
